Groundbait – what is it and when to use it?

Groundbait is a crumbly or sticky mix that you throw or feed in with a feeder to attract fish.

You can use it on lakes, rivers and canals when targeting bream, roach, carp, tench and other white fish.

In cold water you usually want a lighter, less rich mix, while in warm water fish often respond better to stronger, more active groundbaits.

How to choose the right groundbait? Start with the venue and species – river or lake, bream or roach, carp or mixed fish.

On rivers you need a heavier, stickier mix so it doesn’t wash away too fast, while stillwaters often call for a lighter, more active cloud.

How to match colour and flavour? Darker mixes are great in clear or cold water, while brighter ones can work in coloured or warm conditions.

If you’re not sure, pick an all-round “universal” coarse mix and add a bit of soil or pellets to tune it.

Additives, flavours and extra particles

Additives and flavours let you fine-tune your groundbait for different days and waters.

You can add sweet flavours for bream and carp, spicier or fishmeal-based aromas for carp and bigger fish, or keep it very neutral for shy roach.

Extra particles like corn, pellets, casters or chopped worms give fish something to pick up and keep them feeding on your spot longer.
